“Letter to the unknown creatures who live deep in the abyss of the oceans”
At the end of 2025, Giovanbattista Tusa wrote to Françoise Vergès in one of his Letters to the Unknown. He wrote as Vergès was immersed in making a film about the struggles on Réunion Island and in the intimate work of returning to her parents’ personal archives. The letter revived a brief conversation they had once shared in Paris, where their thoughts converged on the necessity of decolonizing the oceans – not as a distant hope, but as an urgent, collective task unfolding in the present.
